Have you noticed that your child’s eyes do not always appear straight, are you concerned about their vision, or do you suspect a lazy eye? An orthoptic examination can also be advisable for double vision, tired eyes or headaches while reading.
The orthoptist examines the alignment, movement and coordination of the eyes. This gives you a clear explanation of what may be causing the problem and what type of support may be appropriate.
Your child’s vision and eye alignment
Are you concerned about your child’s vision, eye alignment or a possible lazy eye? The orthoptist examines how both eyes see, move and work together.
Squinting or a lazy eye
With a squint, the eyes are not always looking at the same point. We examine eye alignment, eye movements and coordination, and discuss what type of support may be appropriate.
Double vision and tired eyes
Do you experience double vision, tired eyes or headaches while reading? We assess how your eyes work together and whether further examination or support is needed.
For comfortable and clear vision, both eyes need to function properly on their own as well as together. During the examination, we assess:
- How clearly each eye sees individually
- Whether the eyes are properly aligned
- How the eyes move
- How both eyes work together
- Whether the brain combines the images from both eyes correctly
Which measurements are needed depends on your age, symptoms and personal situation.
After the examination, we clearly explain our findings. Treatment may include a glasses prescription, eye exercises or regular check-ups.
For children, we involve the parent or guardian in the examination and explanation, so it is clear what is needed at home and during follow-up appointments.
